Before we go into details, what exactly is a first night box? A first night box is a box or bag that contains everything you’ll need on the first night after moving into your new house. This will hold all of your essentials so you won’t be running around tearing boxes apart to find everything. To alleviate some of the stress of moving, create a “first night box” to pack all of the things you’ll need the first night in your new home!
Personal Hygiene Products
It may come as first nature to pack your toothbrush, toothpaste and hairbrush, but there are a lot of other toiletries that tend to get overlooked. Be sure to pack toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, a shower curtain (if needed), a first aid kit, and bedding such as pillows, blankets and sheets.
Cleaning & Maintenance Items
Before starting to unpack, you’ll want to do some basic cleaning at your new house. Trash bags, dish soap, rubber gloves, rags, bleach and other cleaners should all be included in this box. You’ll also want to bring a standard toolbox as well to make any immediate household repairs. This toolbox should be equipped with a hammer, screwdriver, pliers, drill, duct tape, nails and screws. Make sure to also bring spare light bulbs and flashlights to take care of any electrical problems.
Food & Drinks
Moving and unpacking can work up a major appetite. Be sure to pack plenty of bottled water and snacks that don’t need to be refrigerated. While you may eat out or order in for the first few days of unpacking, having all of your dishware and utensils packed away can still cause a bit of a hassle. By having a few disposable cups, plates, bowls and utensils will save you from having to eat off of unpacked boxes.
Just remember to pack your “First Night Box” last so it’s easily accessible!
